Oxford baseball team sweeps Udall in a big way, improves to 7-4

Sumner Newscow report — The Oxford Wildcats improved to 7-4 overall, and 5-3 in the South Central Border League in baseball. The Wildcats are sitting in third right now with a lot of big games left. Oxford Wildcats

Game #1: Oxford 16 Udall 2 (run rule in fifth inning)

Oxford’s Grant Smith took the bump for the Oxford Wildcats in this game, going against Dalton Loos from Udall.

“Smith did an absolutely great job on the hill for us in this game to get the win and move his record to 2-1 on the season,” said Kyle Green, Oxford head baseball coach. “His ERA is now at 2.41 I believe. He gave up two hits, one earned run in the win. He kept his pitch count low and pounded the zone. I loved his competitive makeup in this game.”

Green said Smith got into really two tough spots and battled out of them. He has really come along this year on the hill and gives us everything he has when we run him out there.  Defensively we were fairly solid behind him, we rolled a double play to get out of a tough spot and we were basically clean. Oxford pounded out 14 hits, including three extra base hits.

Game #2: Oxford 13 Udall 3

Camren Clements took the bump in this game for the Wildcats, and much like Smith in the first game, was very solid on the hill.  Clements actually threw a no-hitter in this game, even though we gave up three runs, they were all unearned as our defense wasn’t as sharp as it was in Game 1.

“Camren pounded the zone and kept hitters off balance all night,” Green said. “Once again we pounded out 14 hits in this game, including six extra base hits. The big extra base hit of the day came in the sixth inning, when junior Blake Thurmond hit a three-run home run off of Nolan Williams. This was the first home run hit in Thomas Field History.”

Overall Comments by Green:

It was great to get back on the diamond Monday night. We hadn’t played in a week due to the rain! The boys were relaxed and loose. We got two great pitching performances out of Grant Smith and Camren Clements. The D was solid and we made the plays we needed too. We pounded out 28 hits in the double header, including 9 extra base hits. We had 3 kids that really had monster days for us between the two games. Blake Thurmond had himself a day. He was 5-7, had 8 RBI’s, scored 5 runs, hit 3 triples, and had the 1 HR in the double header. Grant Smith was 4-8, scored 5 runs, had 4 RBI’s, stole 3 bases, and had 2 doubles in the two games. Dylan Reuter was also 4-8 in the two games, scored 6 runs, stole 2 bases, and had 4 singles. Besides those 3, everyone else hit the heck out of the ball. It was a total team effort to get the win. We have a huge week ahead of us next week with 3 double headers, which could decided the regular season league championship as well as seeding for the league tournament and regionals. We just need to continue to work every day and focus on doing the ordinary things extra-ordinarily well.
