by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington High School junior Brock Edwards is heading to the Class 4A state tennis tournament in Topeka next Friday and Saturday, after finishing fifth in singles in the regional held at Wichita Collegiate Saturday.

Edwards placed first after beating Winters of Andover Centeral 6-4, 6-0 for fifth place. Earlier in the day, Edwards would qualify for state after beating Loomis of Pratt 6-4, 6-0.

This will mark Edward’s third trip to the state tournament. He was part of a doubles team in 2015 matched up with Tyler Pettegrew. As a freshman, he qualified in singles.

Edwards was the lone state qualifier for Wellington. James Hinman was eliminated in the first round as the other singles player from Wellington on Friday during the two-day event. Will Long was not able to attend after attending a national competition for the Business Professionals of America.

Neither doubles team had any luck, getting quickly eliminated in the first round. Crusader doubles teams Jaden Adams/Reese Langford and Avery Rademacher/Jared Oathout were unseated and pitted against ranked opponents on Friday.

The top six singles and doubles players in each regional qualified for state.

The state tournament competition will be held May 13-14 at the Topeka-Kossover Tennis Center.
