That smell you smelled this weekend was due to spraying of sludge from Wastewater Plant
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — If you hear someone say “Wellington stinks!†that statement had some merit this past weekend.
But the great thing about this particular smell, it will subside soon (the meat packing plant is a work still in progress).
Wellington Assistant City Manager Jason Newberry said the City Wastewater Plant is doing its periodical removing of by-products or sludge. The City of Wellington then provides the sludge for fertilizer to an area farmer, who is spraying it on his field south of town.
“It just so happens the wind came from the south,†Newberry said. “Also, because it is before wheat harvest, there were limited amount of fields to use.â€
Newberry said the farmer is going to work the soil. Also the .10 inches of rain will help the smell subside.
“It happens at this time every year,†Newberry said.
