by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Wellington’s bad season seems to be getting worse. Not only did the Crusaders lose to Wichita Collegiate 52-0, but they may be without their starting quarterback Cade Phelps.

The starting quarterback left the second quarter with an undisclosed injury while playing defense. He is going to the hospital this evening. He didn’t return the second half.

On the gridiron, Wellington had no answers for the sharp shooting Spartans that moved at will against the Crusaders defense. Collegiate scored with seven different players including a freshman girl kicker who hit a 20-yard field goal near the end of the contest.

The Crusaders fell to 0-5 and will host Scott City on Friday — a team that just pounded Ulysses 53-7.

Wellington gave up 506 yards of offense. The Crusaders gave up 353 yards in passing, and 153 yards in rushing.

In the history of Wellington football, no passer has surpassed the 300 yard mark in a game. Cody McNerney was on fire, rarely misfiring. He went 17 of 19 on the field and accumulated 334 yards.

Four receivers had more than 50 yards, including Cooper Root who accumulated 122 yards on five throws.

Wellington’s best play? It occurred at the very beginning when Crusader Julian Jimenez on the opening kickoff got a huge return to the Collegiate 38.

Then Phelps was going back to pass on third and 8, and didn’t see a blitzing linebacker on his back side. He fumbled, and Wellington eventually recovered the ball 31 yards back making it fourth and 41.

It never got better. Wichita Collegiate scored on its first two possessions. Wellington showed some life early in the second quarter when it drove into Collegiate territory. But Phelps was called short on a rollout on fourth down and Collegiate took over. The Spartans would then go onto add three more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 35-0 lead at the half.

The Spartans added two more touchdowns on their first two possessions in the second half, giving Collegiate a 49-0 lead. For the second consecutive game, a running clock was implemented.

Offensively, Wellington had 85 yards in total offense and only 21 yards in the air.

Wellington had seven sophomores and one freshmen playing throughout the game.
