Conway Springs rolls to 34-12 victory over Cheney; in command of district
Conway Springs Cardinals
Sumner Newscow report — The Conway Springs Cardinals took a huge step toward a 10th consecutive playoff berth with a 34-12 victory over Cheney.
The Cardinals are 2-0 and will play at Chaparral Thursday for an opportunity to win a district championship. Chaparral lost to Garden Plain 22-14. On the other hand, the Cardinals haven’t wrapped up anything yet in this wild district.
Conway Springs opened with a 7-0 lead on a Gunnar Denney 5 yard touchdown. After Cheney responded with a touchdown and missed PAT to narrow the margin to one, the Cardinals scored on a Riley Akiu 1 yard touchdown run. Conway Springs led 13-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Winter would add a 24 yard touchdown run. Gunnar Denny then ran in from the 9.
One area of concern is Cardinal quarterback Colton Terhune left the game in the second quarter and did not return. Trenton Jones led all rushers with 132 yards. Conway Springs had 361 yards of offense to Cheney’s 197. Full stats of the game can be found here.
