Wellington girls dominate; boys lose late; JVers play; Conway Springs boys roll…

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington varsity girls returned from Christmas break with a vengeance. The Wellington boys were not as fortunate. Conway Springs and Belle Plaine also got back on the hardwood as high school basketball season restart.

Girls: Wellington 57 Mulvane 33

An 18-2 second quarter output got the Lady Dukes back to .500 and gave them their first Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Div. IV win of the season.

Wellington led Mulvane 11-10 at the end of the first quarter before going on a tear to lead 29-12 at the half. The Crusaders would expand the lead to 14-8 in the third and ended the game on a running clock.

Three girls were in double figures including Lauryn Snipes with 15., Tayland French 13 and Shayland French 12.

Wellington had a better night from the field going 42 percent and hitting 3 of 7 3-pointers. Wellington was still iffy from the free throw line going 10-of-19 for 53 percent.

T. French was the leading rebounder with 8, while Snipes was huge defensively coming up with nine steals.

Wellington hosts Clearwater Friday.

Boys: Mulvane 69 Wellington 67

The Wellington boys fell to 2-4 losing a close one in Mulvane.

The Crusaders got off to a great start, scoring 25 points and taking an 11-point leading into the second quarter. However, Mulvane would outscore the Gentlemen Dukes in the final three quarters.

The Wildcats had narrowed the lead to four 39-35 at the half and was down by one after three. The final quarter saw the Cats eke out a win in this high scoring affair.

Wellington had three scorers in double figures. Ian King had 21 while A.J. Snipes had 20. Boyer would score 13.

Like in football, Mulvane’s Jayden Price was dominant with 23 points. Drew Ellis, a 5-8, sophomore, would score 20 while Dalton Blaine had 16.

The Crusaders fell to 1-2 in the AV-CTL DIV and 2-4 overall. They host Clearwater Friday.

COUNTY SCORES:

Boys: Conway Springs 66 Cheney 62

Conway Springs used a big 18-9 fourth quarter to beat Cheney. Josh Dugan led the Cardinals from Sumner County with 25 points. Noah Finstad followed with 13.

Conway Springs is now 3-0 in the Central Plains League and 6-1 overall.

Boys: Trinity 58 Belle Plaine 23

The Dragons stumbled across a buzzsaw as Trinity dominated in this battle of 4-1 teams going in.

Trinity took a 15-6 first quarter lead and held a 32-15 advantage at the half. It got worse in the third as the Knights outscored the Dragons 18-4.

Belle Plaine’s leading scorer was Peyton Nolan with 7.

Girls: Cheney 40 Conway Springs 35

Cheney dropped Conway Springs to 2-5, after outscoring the Cardinals to the east 18-7 in the fourth quarter. Up to that point Conway Springs was leading 28-22. Janae Pauly led Conway Springs with 10 and Sabrina Bellar had 9.

Girls: Trinity 45 Belle Plaine 24

The Dragons remained winless with a 21-point loss to the Knights.
