Sumner Newscow report — The following is a press release by the City of Wellington administrative office:

———

The Wellington City Council formally accepted the resignation of Council Member Michael “Mike” Soetaert following his request for the Governing Body to consider this action.

On December 12, 2025, Council Member Soetaert submitted a request for the Governing Body to place his resignation on the agenda. In response, the matter was added to the agenda for consideration during the Council’s regular meeting on December 16, 2025.

During the meeting, Mayor Soria clarified the Council’s position, stating:

“To be clear, we are not asking or forcing the Council member to resign. Based on the email, it appears Council member Soetaert understands the implications of requesting formal action. The next step would be for the Governing Body to vote on accepting the resignation.”

Council Member Soetaert addressed the Governing Body, expressing confidence in its ability to make the appropriate decision. The Governing Body adopted Resolution 6412, formally accepting the resignation and declaring the seat vacant.

Following the meeting, Mayor Soria expressed appreciation for Council Member Soetaert’s service:

“We’re grateful for Council Member Soetaert’s dedication and the energy he brought to working with our volunteer board members and fellow council members. We wish him all the best as he pursues higher office, and we’re confident his skills will allow him to serve not only the citizens of Wellington, but those of Kansas.”

The City Council will use the process set by Resolution 5471 to fill the open seat. Applications will be available online at www.cityofwellington.net and at City Hall starting December 22, 2025. All materials must be turned in to the City Clerk’s Office at 317 S Washington by January 15, 2026. Applications are public information and can be requested by the media or the public.

The Governing Body will review all applications from eligible voters at the City Council Meeting on January 20, 2026. The Mayor and City Council are expected to appoint someone to the open seat at the meeting on February 3, 2026. The new council member will serve for the rest of the term, which ends on December 4, 2029.
