Augusta girls win battle of the undefeated against Wellington Thursday

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Lost in this strange season of postponements and cancelations, was the fact the Wellington and Augusta girls might have been playing for an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV Championship Thursday afternoon at Worden Park.

Thursday it was a battle of the undefeated. Augusta came into the game 12-0. Wellington was 6-0. When the evening was over the more experienced Augusta Orioles won 2-1 and 9-0.

The second game was a let-down for the Lady Dukes, who had an uncharacteristic four errors, while generating just one hit at the plate. Megan Hays of Augusta was sensational on the mound holding the Crusaders to just one hit and striking out six.

The big contest was in game one, in which Wellington lost a heart-breaker to the highly touted Orioles, giving up a run in the bottom of the seventh.

This one hurt, because Wellington had a huge rally going in the bottom of the sixth only to leave two girls on base with the game tied at 1-all. Then in the top of the seventh, Augusta got a run on Wellington’s one and only error in the game. The Crusaders then had one last rally in them getting girls on second and third in the bottom half of the seventh only to be unable to get any of the girls in to score.

The first contest was about as good as game as you are going to see in high school softball. Augusta most certainly is worthy of its undefeated record, rarely making mistakes. It went error free in game one.

The Orioles opened the game with a M. Kirk single who would eventually come home on a K. Robinson RBI. That 1-0 Augusta score would remain so for the next five innings. Neither team defensively were giving up an inch to the other.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wellington made its move. Carlie McComb reached base on a bunt, stole second and advanced to third on a Shanlyn Hefley single. She then came home on a Ryleigh Buck RBI single, knotting the game at 1-all.

However, Kailey Jenkins hit a pop-up fly for the Dukes second out and then Peyton Adams lost the benefit of a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.

Augusta stormed back in the top of the seventh, when C. Marlnee reached base on balls, and then came home on a second baseman error.

Going into the bottom of the seventh, Wellington was back trailing 2-1. In the bottom of the seventh, after two outs, Shelby Hamel and McComb both made singles and reached second and third. However, Augusta ended the game catching a pop-up fly.

For the game, both teams had seven hits. Buck finished the game going 2-of-3 at the plate with a double RBI.
