Belle Plaine is 4-0 with win over Cherryvale
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Belle Plaine Dragons may or may not be the best team in Sumner County, but they are the team with the best record.
Belle Plaine is 4-0. Break out the record books; when was the last time that happened? The Dragons defeated Cherryvale 41-22 on the road.
The Dragons held a 7-6 halftime lead, but opened it up in the third quarter to eventually take a 34-6 advantage. Cherryvale would narrow the margin to 34-22 in the fourth, but Eli Wiseman finished the game with a victory on a 32-yard touchdown run to give the Dragons a 19-point victory.
Cherryvale opened with a 6-0 lead. Then Dragon Luke Baker hit Austin Hilton on an 8-yard touchdown strike. The PAT gave Belle Plaine a 7-6 lead in the first quarter and it remained that way until intermission.
Then in the third, Belle Plaine secured the win. Wiseman went on a 59-yard romp to start the half. That was followed by a Baker 42-yard touchdown. Baker added yet another TD on a 7 yard run up the middle. It was 27-6 at the end of three.
In the fourth, Caleb Steele scored on a 6-yard carry off the left tackle to make it 34-6 with 11:49 to play.
Cherryvale made its comeback scoring on a 59-yard pass, and then scoring a touchdown after a blocked punt.
But time was running out. Belle Plaine would stop Cherryvale’s offense on a fourth down and took over on downs setting up the game-sealing touchdown.
