Belle Plaine Middle Schooler Cheyenne Cooper wins countywide Spelling Bee
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Cheyenne Cooper, a Belle Plaine Middle School student, was this year’s Sumner County Spelling Bee Champion held at the Wellington Middle School auditorium this morning.
Cooper spelled the word “Electrode†to win the competition over 33 other Sumner County spellers from 17 elementary and middle schools. By the way “electrode†is an electrical conductor used to make contact with a non-metallic part of a circuit… in case you were wondering.
The winning word lifted Cooper over Logan Pittman from South Haven Middle School.
Cooper will now advance to Hays to participate in the state spelling bee competition sometime this spring.
“No, I didn’t practice a bit,†laughed Cheyenne. “No strategy.”
Mary Meeker was the pronouncer with Carol Hadorn, Stephanie Frazier and Mark Farley as the judges.
