by Pam Strader, Sumner Newscow —  Stephenie Dixon, Wellington High School alumnus for the Class of 2005, was recently diagnosed with Grade 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer in May 2020.

To help with medical expenses, a chicken and noodle lunch is being held Sunday, October 18 at the Wellington VFW from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 424 E. Harvey Ave.  Additionally, there will be a silent auction and bake sale at the same time/location.

Dixon has a type of cancer that differs from others in that it is invasive breast cancer that is more aggressive. It grows and spreads faster and has limited treatment options.

Dixon is a 33-year-old mother of two. As part of her treatment plan, surgery was not an immediate option. She began chemotherapy recently.

Chemotherapy, along with having Type 1 Diabetes, has proved to be risky and at times dangerous as her blood sugar becomes difficult to manage and her body too weak to fight infections.

The chemo has helped to destroy some of the cancer cells, but she is having to quit the treatments at this time due to the toll it is taking on her body and for financial reasons. Her doctors feel it would be best to go ahead and perform a complete lumpectomy prior to continuing any further chemotherapy treatments.

Wellington has always been home to Dixon where she attended school, participated in many athletic programs through the Wellington Recreation Center and throughout her junior and senior high school years.

For those wishing to contribute a silent auction item, bake sale item, or medical fund donation please contact Susan Day at  (580)789-0674.

Cards and well-wishes can be mailed directly to Stephanie at 1221 N A Street, Wellington, Kansas 67152.

Please come and show your love and support for this young mother as she bravely fights her battle to beat breast cancer.
