Blake Saffell and Ty Wilson are named Big Cheese Athletes of the Week
Blake Saffell and Ty Wilson.
This week’s Big Cheese Athletes of the week are WHS golfers Ty Wilson and Blake Saffell.
Wilson was the winner of the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV tournament held at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson on Thursday. He helped Wellington win the league title for the first time since 2010 with a 75, one shot over Peyton Austin of Rose Hill, as the individual league champion. He then qualified for the Class 4A State Golf Tournament in Emporia with a 74 at the Wellington Regional on Monday.
Saffell shot a 78 in the AVCTL-DIV tournament to finish third. The freshman then returned to his home course Monday and shot a 72 to win the individual regional title. He was two over par on a hot and windy day going even par on the front nine and 2-over on the back. Saffell also qualified for state.
