Blansett trial opens this afternoon after completion of jury process
(Wednesday, 2:45 p.m.) by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A nine man five woman jury has heard opening statements and testimony of seven witnesses so far in the murder trial of Lindsey Nicole Blansett, accused of murdering her 10-year-old son, Caleb.
The state of Kansas is slowly building its case against Blansett, who is facing two felonies of premeditated murder and aggravated assault after being accused of using a rock and knife multiple times to fatally wound her son, Caleb, a Wellington Lincoln Elementary student while he was allegedly sleeping late in the evening last December.
Sumner County attorney Kerwin Spencer opened the trial describing the night of the alleged murder. In his 15-minute presentation, he described Blansett as a woman who had planned out the murder of her child. Blansett’s defense attorney Michael Brown then presented his opening statement to the jury describing the hardship that his client had leading up to the alleged incident.
“At the end of day, you the jury, have to wrestle with the question, ‘why would someone in their right mind do this to a child?’,” Brown said.
Witnesses from the Wellington Police Department, 911 dispatch office and the Sedgwick Forensics Specialists then presented testimony. Eleven pictures of Caleb’s injuries which he allegedly incurred during the Dec. 14, 2014 incident, were presented to the jury on a projection screen.
The prosecution is about to present the 911 tape to the jury. Audio problems to amplify the 911 tape content has caused a delay in the proceedings.
Earlier in the day, a jury was announced at 11:30 a.m. consisting of nine men and five women. The jury selection process took nearly a day and a half with more than 40 prospective jurors interviewed. The trial started at 1:30 p.m. today. Testimony will continue until later this afternoon.
Blansett dressed in a brown sweater with blue-green plaid dress has been in attendance for the jury selection and proceeding. She has remained stoic through the proceedings thus far.
