Burglary suspect still not charged, but is expected to be after hospital release

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Sumner County Sheriff’s Department has not charged the suspect in the burglary at the 1000 block of East 149th Ave., north in rural Mulvane last week involving a homeowner who allegedly shot at a suspect in his garage.

Sumner County Sheriff Deputy Mike Yoder said Jason M. Confer, 31, of Wichita is a suspect in the case and will be formally charged after his release from Wesley Hospital in Wichita.

Confer is currently in the hospital with a collapsed lung. Upon his hospital release, he will be formally charged in front of a Sumner County District Court Judge in Wellington, Yoder said.

The burglary is not casino related, Yoder said.

According to a Sumner County Sheriff press release, the homeowner was awakened by an intruder in his attached garage at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The homeowner went outside to investigate and found a suspect in his garage. The homeowner held the suspect at gunpoint while his wife called 911. When the suspect attacked the homeowner, one shot was fired striking the suspect in the upper chest.

Sumner County Law Enforcement and EMS arrived on the scene and the suspect was taken by Eagle Med to Wesley Medical Center.
