Wellington boys play exciting games
The Crusader baseball team split with Augusta in two exciting ballgames. Augusta won the first game while Wellington took the second in double-header action. The Crusaders are 6-2 for the year.
In game one, Wellington won 2-1 which was also the hitting stats in this defensive thriller.
Trevor Nance threw all seven inning for the Dukes allowing just one hit and four walks. He struck out 10 Oriole batters holding the team to a 1.00 ERA.Â
Wellington didn’t do a lot at the plate either, but enough to secure the win. Sophomores Wesley Gilmore and Connor Phelps each had a hit for the game and scored runs thereafter. Wellington struck out three times.
The Crusaders opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the third and held tough the rest of the way. Augusta’s lone score was a run in the bottom of the sixth.
In game two, Wellington and Augusta both got off to quick starts. Wellington scored in the first inning when Jaden Hines brought Austin Dunn home in the top of the first.
Augusta would score two runs in the bottom of the first to lead 2-1. In the fourth inning, the Orioles expanded the lead to 3-1. Wellington narrowed the margin to one in the top of the fifth when Houston Sober reached base and came home on an Andrew Horn hit.

Augusta beats Wellington softball team
The Crusader girls fell to 2-6, losing the first game 11-2 and the second 17-7 in a five-inning run rule game.
Wellington led in the first inning of the first game after Carlie McComb reached base on a walk and a Jaden Dry RBI single. The Lady Dukes maintained a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when Augusta hit two home runs in two innings and would suddenly lead 8-1.
The Crusaders could not recover. Augusta had 13 hits in the game and never struck out. There were four walks.
In game two, Wellington roared out to a 4-0 lead with McKenna Oathout, Rylee Buck, Peyton Adams and Siarah Walker all scoring in the top of the first.
Augusta narrowed the margin to one in the bottom half of the first. Wellington then added two runs in the second to make it 6-3.
But the bottom of the third again proved to be disastrous for the Crusaders. Augusta scored 10 runs to take a 16-5 and would finish the game two innings later on a run rule.
Augusta had 16 hits for the game. Wellington did not help itself in game two with five errors, after playing errorless ball in game one. The Orioles had two more home runs. They only struck out one time during the two games.

Wellington tennis team places sixth
Wellington’s boys tennis team played in its third tournament of the season. Although it finished sixth out of 10, Wellington had some quality individual wins.
The overall results are as follows:
No. 1 Singles– Tyler Pettegrew finished sixth, losing to C. Martin of Hesston 8-2 in the first round. After he went to the consolation bracket, he beat L. Lloyd of Wichita Independent 8-3, before losing his final match to R. Strunk of Valley Center.
No. 2 Singles– Brock Edwards finished fifth. He lost to PJ Delaney of Valley Center in the first round. After he went to consolation bracket, he beat E. Mitchell of Wichita Independent 8-4 and CJ Schaeffer of Andover 8-3.
No. 1 Doubles– Dutch Brownlee and Avery Chaney finished sixth, losing to J. Maddox and Nagireddy of Wichita Independent 8-0. They went to consolation bracket where they beat Hammar and Bayles of Andover 8-7 (7-5), before losing their final match to Berschauer & Jones of Valley Center 8-2.
No. 2 Doubles – Jon Ryberg and Will Long finished fourth, winning their first round by beating Geidel and Anaya of Hesston 8-6 – in the upset of the day. Hesston was seeded No. 3, Wellington No. 7. They then lost to Haley & Herbst of Valley Center 8-3 before losing their final match to Cunning and Whiteside of Andover Central 8-0.
Wellington Head Coach Allen Keller’s comments:
Tyler and Brock’s wins over the Wichita Independent players and Brock’s win over Andover were quality wins and shows what they both are capable of.
After taking tough losses in the first round, they both settled in and played some very fine tennis. Wellington doesn’t beat anyone from Independent very often and to take two wins in one day was special.
Likewise, after a bruising loss to the 2013 3A State Doubles Champs in the first round, Dutch and Avery collected themselves and beat a very good Andover team in the consolation round in a very close match. Both players executed key shot making ability at crucial times during pressure situations in that match to secure the win.
It was good to see the concentration and focus it takes to make that happen. The surprise of the day was Jon Ryberg and Will Long playing the caliber of tennis they did. Together for the first time, they played remarkably well in their quality win over Hesston.
