Sumner Newscow report — The Caldwell boys defeated Oxford 49-46 in the first round of the Border Queen Tournament held in Caldwell Tuesday evening.

“This was a darn good high school basketball game,” said Kyle Green, Oxford’s head boys basketball coach. “Both teams competing for their tail ends off in the early season.”

Caldwell led Oxford 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, and it was 24-20 at the half. Oxford took the lead after three quarters, after a 17-10 output. But Caldwell would outscore Oxford 15-9 in the fourth.

“Caldwell did a nice job of coming back down from five late,” Green said. “Their kids just battled. Our kids battled all night as well. We just have got to close out ball games late.”

Green said the good thing is his team is figuring out who they are.

“It’s only game 2, as long as we continue to work and get better we will be fine,” Green said. “We play Argonia Friday in the second round of the Border Queen.
