Caldwell Chisholm Trail Fest is Friday, May 6 – Sunday, May 8
Border Queen Caldwell tips her hat to the Chisholm Trail every spring, a nod to our Wild West past that put us on the map. As tradition holds, Friday kicks off the Fest by taking our 4th Graders to an educational tram ride downtown to learn about our humble beginnings as a Trail Town, our Wild West border town cattle town era, and how far we’ve come to be the beautiful quiet small town we know and love today.
FRIDAY from 4-8 pm, experience a flavor of Caldwell’s cultural heritage with the Czech Landmarks Tour will depart from Caldwell, heading west to the two halls and cemetery. Ticket sales start at 3:00 and must be purchased at Joe B’s at 28 S Main. Tours are at 4:00, 5:30, and 7:00 pm. This is a fundraiser for the Czech Chapter to fund their annual student scholarships. Come back, relax and enjoy the awesome music by Old Skool at Joe B’s Saloon from 8 pm-Midnight!
SATURDAY starts with a beautiful Red Hills Trail Ride (B.Y.O.Horse). This 4-hour ride begins at the Caldwell Airport and ends at the City Park. Contact swylie3104@gmail.com for questions. Sign up at caldwellkansas.com under Events. If you don’t have a horse, no worries, just come on downtown for a hot kolache, shop our awesome local shops, take in the informative talks on stage at the Opera House, and do a self-guided Historical Walking Tour, CAB Mural Art Crawl, an app-based scavenger hunt, and “These Old Bones” downtown business district tour (we will have a guided tour at 1:00 pm). True to our past, the Border Queen Regulators and Border Queen Bellas will host a LOUD gunfight at High Noon for your Wild West entertainment!
YOUNGINS FUN: Kid Games by Hope Church and a Petting Zoo by Half Pint Acres will be fun for everyone, PLUS a dance recital performance on the outdoor stage by Midwest Dance Expressions at 11 am. FOOD and plenty of it! Homemade kolaches, Food Trucks, and Fest Specials menus from our local eateries will provide plenty of tasty fare.
MURDER MYSTERY EVENT! Coming off a big celebratory year with our 150th Birthday Bash last year and most likely the last cattle drive for a while, it is a great time to create a new event for some downtown fun. Digging into Caldwell’s early riotous past, the murder rate was sky high down here on the border, providing plenty of fodder for some murder mystery fun! This will be an hour-long, crime-solving, team event with varying start times (2-5 pm) on the afternoon of May 7th. Sign up at caldwellkansas.com under Events.
Saturday afternoon will also have festive live music inside Joe B’s Saloon followed by a spotlight comedy show by Scott Shaffer and Meghan Welch at Joe B’s Saloon at 6 pm! The championship showdown of the Border Queen of Hearts Poker Tournament will begin at 8 pm. Play-in rounds are starting now at Joe B’s on April 9th, 23rd, and 30th. You can watch this intense card-sharking fun, or head out back for some live music on the outdoor stage under the stars featuring Double Down bluegrass music 7-10 pm on the outdoor stage.
Sunday will be a beautiful day to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Caldwell Golf Course! Caldwell Golf Club is hosting the 6th Annual Chisholm Trail Open 4-person scramble at 1 pm. Come try out the new green on #9 and enjoy the day. The public is welcome. Unique because of our border town location, the Caldwell Golf Course is just south of the border in Oklahoma!
So come out and have some fun, spend locally, buy event tickets (Czech Tours, Trail Ride, Murder Mystery) and play along! The Chamber will have new batches of Border Queen coffee and you’ll find t-shirts and other Caldwell merch at several of our downtown businesses. Yeehaw and wear your hat!
