Caldwell clinches the playoffs, A&A falls to South Central, Conway Springs keep rolling…

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Caldwell Bluejays are in the playoffs after beating Medicine Lodge 38-20. Argonia-Attica is also going to the playoffs, despite losing to South Central 38-22. In 11-man football, Conway Springs clinched an undefeated regular season but Belle Plaine lost to Douglass big for the district championship.

Caldwell 38 Medicine Lodge 20 

Caldwell will be traveling to Central Burden for the first round playoff game. The two teams never played during the regular season.

The Bluejays were dominating over the Indians, leading 8-6 after the first quarter, 32-14 after the second before winning by 18. Medicine Lodge outscored the Bluejays in the second half 8-6.

It wasn’t as dominating in the statistical department. Caldwell had 356 yards to Medicine Lodge’s 314. Two Indian interceptions played a part in Caldwell’s victory.

Dru Volavka led Caldwell with 151 yards on 18 carries. Corbin Rice had 127 yards on 37 carries. A Volavka 43 yard pass to Caleb Noyes early in the second quarter proved to be a huge play giving the Bluejays a permanent lead. The full statistics can be found here.

South Central 38 Argonia-Attica 22

South Central blew through the competition in District 2, but A&A came the closest to upending the champions. The Timberwolves led 8-6 midway through the second quarter but scored two first half touchdowns to take a 22-8 lead at the half. South Central would pull away in the second half.

Argonia-Attica will be the fourth seed and will travel to Sedan next Friday which won District 1. No individual stats were available.

Hutchinson Central Christian 64 South Haven 12 

HCC dropped South Haven to .500 in a big way. This game was over at the half. South Haven, at 4-4, will travel to Stafford.

Udall 48 Oxford 0

It was all Udall. Oxford will battle West Elk Friday in a consolation matchup next Friday.

Conway Springs 28 Garden Plain 7

The Cardinals beat their rival to the north in a quickly played game. Conway Springs led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and 21-0 at the half. The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the fourth.

Interestingly, Garden Plain won the statistical battle – accumulating 365 to Conway Springs’ 323. The full stats can be found here: Conway Springs – Box Score Report – 10_20_2018

Douglass 65 Belle Plaine 14

Douglass humbled Belle Plaine taking a huge first half lead and coasting to victory. Belle Plaine, at 4-4, travels to Hutchinson Trinity.
