Caldwell, Conway Springs, South Haven are all victorious

Sumner Newscow report — Caldwell rebounded, Conway Springs rolled, and South Haven broke into the victory column, during week #5 of the high school season.

Caldwell 58, Oxford 30

Caldwell rebounded from its surprising loss last week by blowing past Oxford 58-30 Friday night.

The game started with both teams having fireworks. Caldwell led 32-14 after one quarter, and no one scored in the second.

Kyan Morris scored on a 41-yard run early in the third, and a two-point conversion cut the deficit to 10. Brody Perkins returned the kickoff after touchdown 45 yards for a Caldwell touchdown. Oxford was not able to get closer after that score.

Caleb Noyes was 11-of-18 passing for Caldwell, with three touchdowns, 277 yards, and no interceptions. He also ran for 57 yards and another touchdown.

Dru Volavka had two touchdowns rushing for Caldwell. He also had 103 yards receiving and one touchdown.  Dawson Bristor had 110 yards receiving on three catches with two of them were touchdowns. Trey Strnad also had a touchdown reception for Caldwell.

Caldwell had 292 yards passing and 126 rushing. Oxford had 18 yards passing and 239 rushing.

For Oxford, Morris scored on runs of 24 and 41 yards.  Ty Carter had a 21-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Schulte.  Carter also scored on a 2-yard run.

Caldwell is now 4-1 and has scored 52 or more points in each of its wins.

The Blue Jays host No. 3 South Central next week, a team that is 5-0 and has not been scored on in two weeks. South Central has three shutouts and has allowed just 22 points through five games while scoring 45 or more each game. Oxford is now 2-3 and plays at Argonia-Attica next week.

Conway Springs 64, Wichita Independent 8

Jonathan Wright returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown and Conway Springs never looked back in an easy 64-8 win over Wichita Independent Friday. 

Conway Springs score 28 points in each of the first two quarters to lead 56-0 at the half.

For the Cardinals, Cody Jones scored on a 38-yard run on the next possession. Colin Koester had touchdown passes of 27 and 30 yards to Wright and Jack Ebankamp and there was still just over a minute left in the first quarter.

In the second stanza, Koester scored on runs of 45 and 33 yards. Peyton Winter scored on a 14-yard run and Kyler Alloway scored on a six-yard run to put Conway Springs up 56-0 with 3:36 left until halftime.

Logan Warren scored in a 17 yard run for Conway Springs in the second half. Tanner Baily had a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jay Whitaker late in the game for Wichita Independent.

Conway Springs had 375 yards of offense and averaged 11 yards per play. 

Koester completed three of six passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. He had 110 yards rushing on four carries, with two more scores. Ten more players carried the ball for Conway Springs as the Cardinals rolled up 291 yards rushing.

Conway Springs is now 4-1 and Independent falls to 0-5.  Conway Springs will face another winless team next week when it plays at Whitewater-Remington (0-5). 

South Haven 52 Burrton 6 

The Cardinals broke into the victory column in a big kind of way.

South Haven led 16-6 at the end of the first quarter and was leading 22-6 at the half. The Cardinals opened up a 46-6 advantage after three quarters and coasted the rest of the way for a win.

South Haven hosts Pretty Prairie which defeated this same Burrton team 44-26.
