Caldwell – South Haven girls to face one another for all the marbles: South Haven boys, Argonia girls win

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A Sumner County showdown for the all the sub-state marbles will be occurring in Udall as South Haven and Caldwell girls square off in the championship game. Argonia girls advance, South Haven boys advance. Conway Springs girls await their state game with Garden Plaine. And, Wellington fans, at least Mulvane girls lost by two in the semifinals to Clearwater 50-48. So Friday evening wasn’t a total loss of an evening …

South Haven vs. Caldwell girls – 6 p.m. tonight 

The last time these two teams played, Caldwell would beat South Haven to force a five-way tie in the South-Central Border League Championship.

The two teams will play one another again in an all Sumner County showdown in Udall. The winner advances to state. The other stays home.

In a game that was meant to be close, was not so much as South Haven beat Cedar Vale-Dexter 52-39 on Friday night in the semifinals. Earlier in the evening, Caldwell would eke out a squeaker against St. Paul 41-40.

The two teams split during the regular season.

South Haven vs. Udall boys – 7:30 p.m.

It will be the third consecutive time South Haven and Udall will play for the sub-state basketball championship. The past two times, the winner went on to finish second place in the Class 1A- Division 1 state basketball tournament.

This will be the ultimate grudge match. Both teams are senior laden.

South Haven boys advanced with a 51-32 victory over Caldwell in the semifinals Friday. Udall beat St. Paul 81-75.

The Cardinal boys have beaten Udall during the regular season all three times. However, the last time these two teams played in the semifinals of the South-Central Border League tournament, South Haven won 66-63 in a squeaker.

With it being in Udall’s gymnasium this could be a barnburner of mammoth proportions. We will have the live feed on our twitter account: Cueballnewscow.

 

Argonia vs. Norwich girls – 6 p.m

Wow the great thing about these sub-state championships is they are rivalry battles. The Argonia vs. Norwich girls game is no exception.

Argonia beat host South Barber 48-44 Friday night in the Class 1A- Div. II sub-state. Norwich beat Attica 45-28.

The two teams have played once this season with Norwich winning over Argonia in the Border-Queen Tournament in December.

This marks the second time the two schools have played in a sub-state championship this year. Argonia beat Norwich in the volleyball sub-state championship game and would go on to be state runner-up.

 

Conway Springs vs. Garden Plain girls – 6 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals beat Remington 50-32 Thursday night in the Class 3A sub-state semifinals. Conway Springs now battles Garden Plain Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in its home sub-state. Garden Plain beat Douglass 50-32. The Owls are 21-1 on the season.

Conway Springs girls have played Garden Plain tough this season. The Owls won 45-42 at Garden Plain and 41-32 in Conway Springs.
