Sumner Newscow report — According to a KAKE-TV report, the carcass of an American alligator was reportedly found in the Ninnescah River in Sumner County.

According to a social media post from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), a KDOT worker discovered the deceased animal.

A local herpetologist told KDWPT the alligator carcass is around three-years-old.

“This a reminder that even though they might be cute babies, they will grow up to be a dangerous predator,” KDWPT said in a Facebook post. “They grow a foot per year for their first 10 years of life, after which the rate of growth slows.”

“Most zoos do not accept unwanted pets,” KDWPT said. “When these animals are dumped in the wild it is detrimental to the animal and local wildlife.”
