Chisholm Trail 3 Gun Cowpoke kicks off Kansas Wheat Festival

Mike Yoder of Trigger Guard with the 3-Gun Cowpoke Trophies.
By John Munro, Special to Sumner Newscow – The Wellington Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Trigger Guard Shooting Range to add two new events for the Wellington Wheat Festival this year.
The first event will be held July 9, and will be a cowboy action shoot that is fondly named the Chisholm Trail 3 Gun Cowpoke.
Cowboy action shooting is sanctioned by the Single Action Shooting Society, and involves the shooting of single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and either double barrel, period slide action or lever action shotguns at static targets.
Both time and accuracy are involved, as the most direct hits in the shortest amount of time is how it is scored. There will be three classes for this event, adult males, adult female and youth. Also, a trophy will be awarded for “Best Dressed”. All participants dress up in mid to later 19th Century clothing to imitate what the true people of that era would have looked like. Cowboy action shooting is one of, if now the the most, family friendly of all the shooting events. There will be three trophies for each division awarded, first, second and third place. Food will be provided by Traveling Smoke BBQ, and the event times are from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The second event is the 5th Annual Sunflower Classic Glock Shooting Sports Foundation (GSSF) area shoot. This is an event that Mike Yoder, owner of the Trigger Guard Range started because of his love for competing in the Glock shooting events. Over the years it has grown to one of the major events in the Glock Shooting Sports organization, and this year will have somewhere in the vicinity of 500 contestants from seven to eight different states.
Shooting involves both speed and accuracy, with the best combination scoring the highest. This event will begin on Saturday, July 15 and run through Sunday, July 16. Competition will begin early, and run all day both days. Burgers, hot “dawgs” and the usual sides will be available both days.
Spectators are always welcome at the Trigger Guard, however hearing and eye protection are required when near any active shooting. Free ear plugs will be available at both the Chamber office and at the range for anyone with a Wheat Festival button.
For anyone needing more information on these and any other events at the Trigger Guard, please contact Mike Yoder at 620-326-1504, or call or stop by the Chamber office at 620-326-7466.
Address for the Trigger Guard is 313 North Meridian Road. Directions are as follows: From McDonalds in Wellington, go east on U.S. 160, then turn north on Boundary Road two miles to 30th, before turning right on 30th for approximately 1/8 mile to Meridian, turn left on Meridian to the range. Signs are posted.
