City of Wellington anticipates wintery storm in next 48 hours

Sumner Newscow report — The following is a press release issued through the City of Wellington this morning.

———

As of the time of this release, we are expecting a combination of rain and wintry precipitation over the next 36 to 48 hours.  We believe we will see rain this afternoon, turning to snow just before midnight and continuing through Wednesday into early Thursday morning.  Total accumulation is estimated at 5-7 inches.  Due to the initial rain, we will not pretreat roads with salt brine as it will be washed away before the snow.

Salt brine may be used later to assist with clearing icy or snow-packed roads, depending on conditions.  We are preparing all of our snow removal equipment and plan to have a split crew begin clearing roads at 4:00 AM Wednesday unless called out earlier.  Another crew will take over mid-afternoon to continue removal throughout Wednesday.  Scheduling beyond that point will be determined based on the severity of the storm and the conditions of the roads.

For Primary and Secondary Streets, it is recommended that cars normally parked in the street be moved to an off-street location if possible for more effective snow removal.  Street classification along with the rest of the City’s Snow Removal Policy has been posted on the front page of our website, www.cityofwellington.net, and can always be found on the Street Department page.

Staff will continue to monitor the progress of the system as it moves east and will adjust our schedule accordingly.

For specific questions or information, please contact the Street Department at (620) 326-7831.
