Collegiate throttles Wellington on homecoming weekend 48-14

Carter Burnett makes the tackle against Wesley Fair.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — We have been down this road before. The Crusaders appear to be chugging along, being undefeated or showing great strides the week before. And Collegiate comes in and derails us… significantly. 2022 was no exception.

Collegiate destroyed Wellington 48-14 on the red-and-silver homecoming, including a 41-point barrage in the second quarter alone. Wellington is now 1-2 and travels to Labette County, hoping to get its season back on track.

This game was humbling as Wellington went into the contest with legitimate hope of winning or at least playing an exciting game for the alumni.

Instead, Collegiate dictated the game from the onset. Starting at its own 30, Collegiate would methodically march down for its first score that ended on a Wesley Fair touchdown. Crusader quarterback Dusty Bannister then threw only his second interception of the season to give the Spartans short-field possession.

Skylar Branam on a pass reception in the first quarter.

After the first quarter ended, the teams exchanged fields, and everything unraveled. Collegiate went on a six-touchdown romp that even Andale may have had difficulty duplicating. Nothing went right. Collegiate getting great success on the outside, threw a 14-yard pass from Fair to Will Strecker.

The next four drives resulted in four touchdown runs for 4, 2, 48, and 64. The last one was a result of a screen pass. The indignity of it all Wellington ran the same screen play, and defensive lineman Jace Campbell – all 6-3, 220 pounds of him – grabbed it on the interception and ran it back for a pick six with less than a minute to play in the half.

It was an improbable end to an improbable quarter. Wellington had a running clock for the rest of the game.

The Crusaders would score two touchdowns in the second half. Malachi Rogers, who ran for 129 yards for the game, scored on a 15-yard touchdown. At the end of the game, Cope Henry made an impressive 26-yard touchdown catch.
