Conway Springs and Argonia-Attica advance in playoffs; host opponents Friday
By James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — Both Conway Springs and Argonia-Attica were winners in playoff games Friday night, and both will host quarterfinal round games next Friday in the Kansas High School football playoffs.
Conway Springs beat Chaparral 21-14, and will host No. 1 Phillipsburg next week. Conway Springs is ranked No. 3 in Class 2A, and both teams are unbeaten. Of the eight teams remaining in Class 2A, four are unbeaten. See Class 2A West Bracket here.
Argonia-Attica beat Udall 42-36 in Udall, and will host Solomon next Friday. Neither team is ranked by K-Preps. Argonia -Attica is now 6-3 and Solomon is 8-1. See Class 8-man Div. 1 bracket here.
Conway Springs beats Chaparral
Conway Springs won at Chaparral 53-23 in early October. Last night’s game was much closer, but Conway Springs relied on its running game and its stout defense to hold on after taking a 21-7 lead into the fourth quarter. See statistics here.
Conway Springs got on the scoreboard early when Zachary Mercer scored on a 68-yard run. Chaparral responded by tying the game with two minutes left in the half. Conway Springs wasted no time re-taking the lead, scoring on an eight-yard run by Collin Koester with 20 seconds left in the half.
Conway Springs scored again early in the third quarter on a seven-yard run by Mercer. Koester ran in a two-point conversion and the Cardinals led 21-7.
With four minutes left in the game Chaparral scored on a pass to cut the deficit to 21-14, but could get no closer.
Conway Springs rolled up 293 yards rushing, and did not complete a pass. The Cardinals averaged 5.5 yards per rush
Chaparral had 132 yards passing and 158 yards rushing.
Koester had 138 yards rushing on 28 carries for Conway Springs. Mercer had 98 yards on six carries. Peyton Winter had 58 yards rushing.
Mercer also led the defense, registering nine tackles, six of them solo. Daniel Becker had 7.5 tackles and a sack. Chase Ast also had a sack for the Cardinals.
Argonia-Attica wins close one
Argonia-Attica won a back and forth game with Udall Friday, 42-36, to advance to the next round in the state playoffs. Udall beat Argonia-Attica on Sept. 28 earlier this season, 22-14.
On Friday, Udall led 14-12 after the first quarter, and 22-18 at the half. Argonia-Attica had a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third quarter to take a 26-22 lead into the final quarter. Both teams scored twice in the final quarter.
Blake Harden was 6-11 passing for 116 yards and one touchdown. Harnden also ran for 91 yards. Mason Miller had two rushing touchdowns and 60 yards. Masen McDaniel also ran for two touchdowns. Miller also had a touchdown receiving. Ezra Goodman had 62 yards receiving for the Titans.
