Submitted to Sumner Newscow — It was an all Sumner County affair in the championship game of the 14-under girls softball Babe Ruth Tournament in Newton this weekend.

Conway Springs won the state championship with a 16-4 victory over the Wellington Warriors Sunday afternoon.

The tournament involved 10 teams that also included Andover, Newton, Rose Hill, Haysville, Tri-Valley, Independence, Erie, and Lakin.

With Pool Play compete, both Sumner County teams advanced to bracket play. The Warriors began bracket play with a rematch against Erie.  This game was just as exciting as the first with a trip to the championship game on the line.

The first 4 innings were scoreless before Erie broke through with a single run in the fifth inning.  Wellington was able to match the run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the sixth inning Erie again was able to score a run to take a 2-1 lead.  In the bottom of the sixth, Wellington was able to break the game open, scoring 4 runs to take a 5-2 lead.  Madi Lewellen completed the game with a scoreless seveth.

That led to the Sumner County showdown.

All 4 teams in the semifinals qualified for the Regional Softball Tournament in Boonville, MO the weekend of July 25th-28th.
