Conway Springs, Belle Plaine girls get eliminated from post season

Sumner Newcow report — Two Sumner County girls teams were quickly knocked out of the Sedan sub-state tournament. Wichita Independent ended the Belle Plaine girls season with a 43-36 victory. Conway Springs lost a heartbreaker in Sedan 54-53.

Wichita Independent used a 12-3 first-quarter output and would never relinquish the lead thereafter. It was 24-13 at the half. In the third Indy expanded the lead to 34-18 before Belle Plaine narrowed the margin to seven at the end.

Taylor Bohannon, who ended her senior year as a Dragon, led all scorers with 20 points. She recently signed to play basketball at McPherson College. Other scorers included: Cheyenne Cooper 9, Alaya Mowdy 3, Mallory Reynolds 2, Airalyn Frame 1, Alyssa Hunter 1. 

Belle Plaine had a tough night shooting, going 10 of 48 from the field for 21 percent. They were 9-of- 16 at the free throw line for 56 percent. The Dragons had 30 rebounds and three steals. They turned the ball over 20 times.

The Dragons had a heck of a year, going 11-10, for their first winning season in over a decade.

Sedan 54 Conway Springs 53

It was a battle between the #4 seed and the #5 seed and it was that kind of game. Sedan secured the win by scoring with four seconds left and Conway Springs had no timeouts left. Considering Sedan is hosting its own sub-state, it was a huge win for the Blue Devils.

“I thought the girls fought very hard,” said Pat Carl, head Conway Springs girls coach. “It was a battle all night. We came from behind a couple of times to take the lead but just couldn’t put them away.”

Kara Koester scored 32 points as a senior. She was perfect at the free-throw line, going 10-0f-10.

“Kara was phenomenal tonight,” Carl said.

Sedan opened with a 17-9 first-quarter lead but Conway Springs and was trailing 25-23 at the half. Conway Springs then took the lead by one at the end of the third quarter. Sedan would outscore Conway Springs 15-12 in the fourth to pick up the win.

“I was very proud of this team,” Carl said. “They never gave up.”
