Conway Springs Daniel Becker and Zach Mercer named Big Cheese Athletes of the Week
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Conway Springs seniors Daniel Becker, a 6-3, 250 pound, offensive/defensive lineman and Zach Mercer, a 5-10, 165 pound free safety and running back have been named Big Cheese Athletes of the Week. They helped the Cardinals to a 10-1 record, losing the final game in a heart breaking sectional playoff game, 25-24 to top ranked Phillipsburg.
Becker, who was also named the Central Plains League defensive Most Valuable Player, had a team high 17 tackles for losses, five sacks for 52 yards, and 90 tackles throughout the season.
“He is very athletic, while pulling and leading the way for the team that rushed for 3,705 yards and adding another 500 passing yards,” said Matt Biehler, Conway Springs head football coach. On Friday, Becker had 6.5 tackles against Phillipsburg.
Mercer, who was a first team all-CTL free safety and second team flex player, led the team in tackles with 102. He had 10 pass breakups, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He also rushed for 662 yards and had eight touchdowns in 2018. On Friday, he had eight solo tackles and rushed for 153 yards on 21 attempts.
For their efforts, Becker and Mercer, are each recipients of a large delicious pizza at Big Cheese at 324 N. Washington in Wellington.
