Conway Springs takes down Marion 28-20, set to play Medicine Lodge in the semifinals

Sumner Newscow report — The Conway Springs Cardinals have made it to the state semifinals for the second consecutive year. The Cardinals defeated Marion 28-20 Friday night on the road.
Conway Springs will now battle Medicine Lodge at home next Friday night for a chance to go to the Class 1A state championship game. The two teams played earlier this year with the Cardinals winning 40-34.
Conway Springs built a 15-6 lead in the first half and was up 28-14 early in the fourth quarter to hold onto victory.
The Warriors opened the game when Trevor Schafers rushed for a 51-yard touchdown. Conway Springs’ Brayden Kunz returned the favor with a 5-yard touchdown scamper. The two-point conversion made it 8-6 Cardinals.
In the second quarter, Kunz scored another on a 5-yard run to give Conway Springs a 15-6 lead. In the third quarter, Kunz added another and Conway Springs was rolling leading 21-6.
Jack Lanning added a touchdown in the third to narrow the margin to 21-14, before Kunz scored his fourth and final touchdown of the night on a 17-yard carry.
Kunz had quite a night gaining 194 yards on 37 carries for a 5.2 average. Nathan Berntsen had 54 yards on 12 attempts. Lanning led Marion with 139 yards on 17 attempts.
The offensive statistics were even. Conway Springs had 331 yards to Marion’s 309. The Cardinal had 316 yards in total rushing.
