Cora ‘Mondella’ Craig, 97, Conway Springs: Sept. 24, 1925 – March 18, 2023
Cora “Mondella” Craig, 97 years of age, died on March 18, 2023, at Spring View Manor in Conway Springs. Mondella was born September 24, 1925, in Duquoin, Harper County. She was the 5th child of Roy Craig and Cora Burke Craig. Her family moved to Belmont, Kingman County, and she began her education at the Golden Rule Country School. Mondella graduated from Belmont High School in May 1943. She entered Nursing Training in February 1945 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma, graduating in March of 1948 with her Registered Nurse degree. In September of 1948, Mondella began working for Dr. A. B. Wight as a secretary and nurse in his Enid office. This turned into a career that spanned 38 years and 4 months until Dr. Wight’s retirement. Mondella then went to work for Dr. David Selbey for 8 years until her own retirement June 30, 1995.
On July 3, 1998, Mondella moved to Argonia, to be closer to family. She joined the Argonia Wesleyan Church on April 22, 2001. Mondella became a Christian at a very early age and served her Savior all of her life. She had many friends in Argonia and enjoyed every one of them. When the New Cornerstone Church was built in Argonia, she enjoyed Sunday night and Wednesday night services there.
Mondella actively volunteered throughout her life. She was Secretary of the Garfield County Oklahoma Nursing Association. She served as Sunday School Secretary and Treasurer of her church in Enid for 35 years. She was a member of the Oklahoma Chisholm Trail Chapter of American Business Women’s Association. She crocheted booties and blankets for babies in need for Birthright. She served as secretary of Sumner County Senior Care Act Association. She volunteered for Provide A Ride for Sumner County and generously volunteered for anyone who needed help.
Mondella is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Cora Craig; brothers: Harry Craig (Almeda), Wilbur Craig (Henryetta), Winfred “Tom” Craig (Mary), Donald Craig; sisters: Olive Bennett (Rusty), Nadine Smith (Lester), Betty Nix; nephew, Merle Craig; niece, Janis Kay Cook; and brother in-law, Alva Cook.
Survivors include sister, Dorla Cook; brother in-law, Roy Nix (Earlene); and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, March 27, 2023 with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services for Mondella will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at the Plains Church in Argonia. Interment will follow at the Austin Cemetery in Anson, Sumner County.
A memorial has been established in her memory to the Plains Church and the Cornerstone Church. Contributions may be mailed or left with the funeral home.
