by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Sometimes the force is with you, the stars are aligned, everything just goes exactly right. Courtney Wiens was the winner of the fourth annual Sumner Newscow/Pig Shack Bracket Contest. Wiens received $200 for taking Villanova over North Carolina for the NCAA Tournament Championship.
So when Kris Jenkins hit his improbable trey to give Villanova the NCAA Championship, Wiens became $200 richer.
“That’s the first time I have ever filled out a bracket,” Wiens said. “I wasn’t going to do it this year either, but I decided ‘what the heck.'”
Wiens out-pointed about 120 other brackets submitted to Sumner Newscow and the Pig Shack contest. The other winners were:Â Second place – $50 gift certificate from Pig Shack – Tim Hay.
Third place (tie) – $25 gift certificate from Pig Shack – Brian Lewellen, Casey Weir. Pig Shack owners decided to just give the gift certificates to both instead of having a drawing.
Wiens said she is going to use the money to pay for her transmission for her car.
She said there was no real reason why she picked Villanova except she liked the name. She says she watches some college basketball but mostly during the tournament.
