Crusader preview: Wellington is heavily favored, but should be weary of dangerous El Dorado team

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It is already week four, and Wellington has its homecoming game with El Dorado this Friday night.
According to computer estimates, Wellington is a 49-point favorite going into the game. But that doesn’t account for the x-factor of off-the-field distractions, and we all know there’s plenty of that right now with Crusader Nation.
But acting head coach Ryan Jenkins, who will remain the acting coach this Friday night, said last week the Wellington players handled the distractions pretty well against Andale.
It is easy to agree. Wellington’s loss last week had more to do with dropped passes, penalties, and Andale’s line domination – something that would have been a problem no matter who was on the football sidelines.
Wellington needs to be careful tomorrow night on its homecoming. El Dorado has just snapped a 28-game losing streak when it defeated Clearwater 14-13 last week. The Wildcats will undoubtedly be fired up to win another one.
El Dorado is currently led by Skyler Demel at quarterback, who is 9-of-21 for 172 yards in its three games thus far this season. Its leading running back is Hunter Conrad, who has rushed for 130 yards for a 3.7 ypg average.
Statistically, Wellington undoubtedly has the better stats.
Quarterback Colton Elmore is currently on top of all Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League teams across all four divisions, with 689 yards of offense. Receiving-wise, Wellington has three receivers in the top 20. Jackson Curry has 185 yards, Cole Zeka 145, and Nelson Armstrong 132.
This will probably be the last game of the year where Wellington is heavily favored. On a night when the alumni are back in town, the Crusaders will need to get this game into the victory column, because the season will get much tougher.
