Crusaders win the battle of the mat, but not the scoreboard vs. El Dorado

Madi Fullerton was victorious at 130 vs. El Dorado’s Vivion Ramsey.

By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — On the mat, both the Wellington girls and boys out-wrestled the El Dorado Wildcats. The trouble was the scoreboard, as El Dorado girls and boys swept the Crusaders on Senior Night yesterday evening.

El Dorado scored a 48-36 victory for the girls, while the boys won 47-36. The Crusaders cannot capture an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV with the losses.

In actual matches fought, Wellington girls won four of the seven matches, and the boys won five of the eight matches.

Cayson Ramirez was victorious again on Thursday.

Open matches were the problem for the Crusaders. Wellington had four open weight classes to three for El Dorado on the girls’ side and a five-to-two ratio for the boys.

For the girls, Caroline Mott at 115, Madi Fullerton at 130, Georgia Shinliver at 135, and Natalie Burnett at 235 were victorious on the mat.

For the boys, Zane Lozano at 126, Axl Norris at 150, Cayson Ramirez at 190, Goran Djurovic at 215, and Boston Bernd at 285 all pulled out victories.

Caroline Mott won an exciting battle at 115.

It was Wellington’s lone home wrestling dual of the 2025 portion of the season. The Crusaders are just a week away from regional competition and will not have any more regular-season duals or tournaments. The girls wrestle on Friday and Saturday next weekend in McPherson, while the boys are slated in two weeks for Rose Hill.

There were some close and exciting matches.

Mott, a sophomore, battled Mahina Nesmith in a three-round rumble that saw three different lead changes. Mott finally got the reversal she needed to pin her opponent at the 5:21 mark of the match.

Goran Djurovic won his 215 match against Lane Bright at 215 of El Dorado.

Fullerton also saw a tug-of-war match where she fell behind, only to come back with a pin at 4:33 in the third period.

Lazono and Norris got quick pins on the boy’s side. That set up a Wellington trifecta punch late with the heavyweights. Ramirez would pin his opponent in 34 seconds, Djurovic got a pin in the second, and Bernd picked up a pin at 1:16 after falling behind by three.

Girls: Wellington 48 El Dorado 36

Boys: El Dorado 47 Wellington 36
