CultureCow: Finally, some time to catch up on these shows I’ve been putting off
by Devin McCue, Sumner Newscow — Hang up your headphones because it’s all about the screens this week, whether they be big or silver. It’s September, which means a couple of things: the NFL is back, we all get off work for Labor Day, and there are bad movies in the theaters.
It’s not anyone’s fault, but the September release dates are reserved for movies either not exciting enough to be a summer-block buster or too poorly written — if that’s even possible — or not scary enough to be a Halloween weekend draw.-
September is the annual doldrums we all have to put up with to enjoy the good stuff coming up, but that doesn’t mean it’s all bad! Bad movies have a lot to offer and allow for dark “action thrillers” like Peppermint (starring Julia Gardner of all people, the Capital One girl for Pete’s sake) to become painfully lacking-in-self-awareness comedies for our viewing pleasure. Just to drive my point home, three September releases: Peppermint, The Nun, and Predator, have a combined Rotten Tomatoes score of 73 percent, which is less than every single Marvel movie, barring Iron Man 2 and Ed Norton’s Incredible Hulk (unfair in my opinion).
So while September may not be the best time to go catch a big premiere, use this time wisely to catch up on all those shows you’ve been meaning to get to.![]()
And while you’re desperately trying to catch up, let me add a little more to your plate. Norm MacDonald Has a Show at first glance is just another celebrity talk show hosted by a seemingly washed-up comedian. But watch a single episode and you’ll see why this show is a cut above the rest.
While it is a 25-35 minute interview with some celebrity, the show has a clever twist that keeps you laughing hysterically and coming back for more. The schtick is there is no editing done in post production. That means when I say each interview goes 25-35 minutes, I really mean it.
Like every host, Norm says things like “and we’ll be back right after this,” but as his logo comes across the screen, he continues to talk to his guests as if they’re on commercial. This leads to some very interesting stories and a calmer persona from people that you don’t normally see on late night talk shows like Colbert or Fallon. Norm MacDonald’s incredible sense of humor also hardly matched and you can’t help but love the guy and his laid-back, old-time character. With interviews from people like David Spade, Michael Keaton, and Jane Fonda the show is never want for talent and great conversation.![]()
This is less an entertainment story than a science news update, but the playful genius Elon Musk announced this week he’s signed his first passenger to the moon with his company Space X. We all know that Elon Musk is a crazy person who might be the closest thing we ever get to a real life super villain.
Like honestly think about all the tropes you’ve seen from movies growing up, and Musk fits the bill: he’s a technological genius, he owns a literal space company, he smokes cigars, and the dude just looks like he has a secret evil plot for world domination. But no matter his super villain status, I love space and I’m glad someone is finally going back to the moon, because its probably been super lonely since 1969.
The lucky (and possibly insane) billionaire that paid Elon a gruesome sum for this ticket is Japanese internet mogul Yusaku Maezawa. He’s apparently been on board for some time now and he has an interesting plan for his launch, prospectively dated some time in 2023. He plans to bring with him a group of artists ranging from musicians to painters to writers and upon their return he will ask them to create something inspired from their trip. I think it’s a brilliant idea so look forward to 2024 when the newest moon jam will dominate the radio.![]()
Finally, let’s cap the article off with a few updates for stories CultureCow has been following. There’s the first trailer for Captain Marvel, the first time we’ll be able to meet the heroin teased at the end of Infinity War. Played by an un-smiling Brie Larson, Captain Marvel looks to be the Superman movie we never got in the DC universe and a spectacular introduction to the character to all of us probably unfamiliar with the alien.
Waaaaaaay back in one of CultureCow’s first articles, I wrote about a great and light-hearted new show about an autistic boy just looking for love called Atypical. This is the kind of show geared towards any age group and any preference of style of genre. It finally came out with new episodes and it looks like it’s actually moving the plot forward into un
explored areas when it could’ve thrived off the formula it created in season one. Whether it’s your first time watching or you’ve been anticipating the next season for months, season two is here and it’s just waiting for you to binge.![]()
