Darrell “Melvin” Jacob Clifton, of Wellington, died Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Via Christi – St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 70.

Melvin was born the son of Brady Thomas and Georgia Mae (Higgins) Clifton on Thursday, July 24, 1947 in Paragould, Arkansas. On June 7, 1974, Melvin and Sharon Kay Ullum were united in marriage in Haysville, Kans. Together they celebrated 43 years of marriage. Melvin was proud to serve his country in the United States Army. He was a cook and dishwasher at the Scotsman Restaurant for nine years but stopped because of health concerns. Melvin then went on to begin a career at the Wellington Daily News delivering the papers, with his family, for over 26 years. He continued with the paper up until his recent hospitalization. Melvin will be remembered and missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Clifton of Wellington; daughter, Kay Clifton of Wellington; son, Chris Clifton of Wellington; sister, Marie Alls of Pocahontas, Ark. and his “adopted” daughter, Rebecca Gray and her husband Mike and their son, Joseph Merritt of Wichita, Kansas along with a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and a sister.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 7, 2017 with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services for Melvin will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Wellington.

Interment and Military Honors will follow at Sumner Memorial Gardens in Wellington.

A memorial fund has been established in his loving memory to the First Baptist Church or Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Contributions may be mailed or left with the funeral home.
