District competition begins tonight for Sumner County schools; Conway Springs hosts Trinity
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — District competition will begin for the eight-man teams in Sumner County tonight. Here are previews of the teams and the districts they play.
Eight-man 1 Dist. 2.
This week: Udall at Oxford –
Oxford has not made the playoffs since moving down to eight-man football in 2008. This might be the Wildcats year in what is a very winnable district.
Oxford and Cedar Vale-Dexter are both 2-2 going in and the other four opponents have a cumulative record of 2-14.
The Wildcats are battling Udall tonight in what will be a winnable game. Udall’s only win has been against South Haven.
The Wildcats have to be licking their paws for this one. Oxford has not beaten Udall since at least 2008.

Eight-man 1 Dist. 6
Argonia-Attica at Pratt Skyline
Argonia-Attica is playing eight-man division 1 after playing in division 2 the past two seasons. This could be a very winnable district. South Central, which is the consolidated district of Coldwater and Protection, is also 3-1 and the only team with a winning record. A&A’s travels to Pratt Skyline this weekend still in search of its first win.
Kiowa County is the consolidated schools of Greensburg and Haviland.

Eight-man 2 Dist. 2.
This week:Burrton at Caldwell, South Haven at Hartford
It is apparent this might be Caldwell’s year. The Bluejays have not been stopped so far or have made it to the end of a game without a running clock. The Bluejays have outscored their opponents: 250-60 and 48 of those were scored by A&A.
Caldwell will cruise past Burrton this weekend. South Haven is an outsider looking in. Hartford is 3-1.

Meanwhile in Class 3A
Wichita Trinity (2-2) at Conway Springs (4-0)
The Cardinals are at home vs. Wichita Trinity which is 2-2. Trinity defeated Conway Springs in 2014, but the Cards avenged that loss in 2015. Trinity lost to Chaparral 41-21 last week. Sumner Newscow will have a reporter there tonight.
Garden Plaine (4-0) at Belle Plaine (1-3)
The Dragons are still on a high after last week’s big 48-0 win over Northeast Arma. Trouble is Garden Plain will probably not allow them to do too much celebrating. The Owls are 4-0 and have been good doing so.
