Dr. Martin D. Shetlar, age 84, of San Anselmo, California, formerly of Conway Springs, died on February 27, 2023.
Martin was born August 28, 1938, at Wichita, to Luther Shetlar and Dorothy (Taylor) Shetlar. He grew up in Conway Springs, graduating from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1956. He continued his education and attended Kansas State University, majoring in Chemistry. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he met the love of his life, Margaret Smith, whom he married on December 30, 1966. They had one daughter, Sarah.
Martin spent 40 years as a Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco, retiring in 2008. He loved teaching, supervising the work of his postdoctoral research students, and the hands-on aspects of his own research. Martin was known as a kind, gentle man by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed by those he leaves behind.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of San Anselmo; CA; his daughter, Sarah (Benjamin) Kittrell of Wichita, KS; his siblings, Anne (Phil) Rush of Conway Springs, KS; Jim (Janet) Shetlar of Frankenmuth, MI; his granddaughter Abigail; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Methodist Church, Conway Springs, Kansas with Pastor Jacob Maforo officiating.
