Foot and ankle care doctors are close to home
Last December, the providers, and staff at Walnut Valley Foot Specialists became part of the William Newton Hospital network of clinics forming William Newton Foot and Ankle. Podiatrist Thomas Lyman, DPM, started practicing in Winfield in 2014. Two years later Anthony Elliott, DPM joined the practice located at the Physicians Pavilion on the hospital campus.
As full-time practicing podiatrists, Drs. Lyman and Elliott serve Cowley, Sumner, Chautauqua, Elk, Harper, and Kay counties. An outreach clinic is also offered in Wellington at Sumner County Family Care Center.
During a recent live interview for the Wellington Chamber of Commerce virtual chamber coffee, Dr. Elliott spoke about the Wellington outreach clinic’s services.
“I feel like I have already introduced myself to a lot of Wellington because we have been offering an outreach clinic here since I joined Dr. Lyman in Winfield. I’ve been here pretty much the whole time. I’ve gotten to know a lot of the patients here. I’ve gotten to know a lot of the physicians here as well, and we have a very good working relationship.”
William Newton Foot and Ankle offers both non-surgical and surgical solutions ranging from orthotic arch supports, injections, and shockwave therapy, to reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.
“When people think about podiatry, there’s a certain subset of services they think of. We do those as well, but with a large emphasis on surgical reconstruction if necessary,” explained Elliott.
Dr. Elliott is a part of a growing roster of surgeons at William Newton Hospital due to the H. L. Snyder Medical Foundation Surgery Center’s recent expansion. The surgery center opened in January and included an additional operating room, pre/post-operative care units, cardiovascular catheterization laboratory, chapel, and two waiting areas.
“The surgery center expansion furthers our vision to increase access to specialty care in the communities we serve,” remarked William Newton Hospital CEO Ben Quinton. “William Newton Hospital has become the most comprehensive and advanced in surgical care in our service area.”
Although non-surgical treatments are often the first route the physicians at William Newton Foot and Ankle take, Dr. Elliott shared several surgical options available. “We have the tools and the training to do a lot more. Some of those include ankle fractures, ankle replacement, sports injuries, ankle reconstruction, chronic sprains, flat foot deformity, and bunions. Bunions are very common; that’s one of my fortes. I really enjoy fixing bunions with a relatively new procedure called the lapiplasty, which allows patients to have the bunion fixed at the root of the cause.”
The technology at William Newton Hospital allows providers to diagnose and treat both common and uncommon foot and ankle conditions.
“With a newer system, we are able to get patients walking in a CAM boot (foot brace) in about two weeks afterward. The whole six weeks without weight-bearing is typically a thing of the past for those, [and] we have had very good results.”
Drs. Elliott and Lyman are proud to serve the region on Thursdays at the Sumner County Family Care Center or at Winfield’s full-time practice.
“If it’s anything foot and ankle, we would be happy to see those issues,” Dr. Elliott concludes.
