Fifth inning dooms Wellington baseball team in regional championship
by James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — Wellington High School baseball team played two great games Wednesday at the regional tournament in Winfield. But a couple of errors late cost the Crusaders in the finals, as they lost to Rose Hill 4-1. Earlier in the day Wellington beat Mulvane 5-2.
The Crusaders had played error free ball for most of the day. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning Wellington was holding onto a 1-0 lead against Rose Hill. But that is when the wheels fell off for a little bit.
Rose Hill’s Griffin McBride walked and then scored on a Brett Bonar double to tie the game. Another walk put two runners on, and then a costly error allowed both of them to score. The ball got through the infield but rolled short of the outfield making it a difficult play to make.
Rose Hill added an insurance run in the sixth on another error that allowed Dylan Sinclair to score from second after he had doubled.
Wellington had made a lot of great defensive plays earlier in the game to get out of jams to that point.
Crusader pitcher Cade Phelps held Rose Hill down most of the game. Through four and two thirds innings he had given up one walk and two hits and had two strikeouts. From that point there were two more hits and two more walks.
Wellington got on the scoreboard early with Conner Phelps drilling a triple into right field on the first pitch of the game. He scored on a ground out by Cameron Bartelson.
Both teams managed to get the bases loaded in the third inning with two outs, but could not score.
After the first inning, Wellington was held to four hits and had five strikeouts by two Rose Hill pitchers.
Cade Phelps had a double and a single for Wellington. Chevy Nuss also had a single.
Wellington 5, Mulvane 2

Through three innings Mulvane did not have a hit, but they got three in a row in the fourth to load the bases with one out. A run scored on a deep fly by Zach Helbing.
The inning ended when catcher Cameron Bartleson threw a runner out at second.
