Filing deadline for city council candidates is noon on June 1, 2017

Sumner County ElectionSumner Newscow report — There will be three City Council member positions open for the General Election to be held on November 7, 2017.  The filing deadline for candidates is noon on June 1, 2017.  Candidates must file with the County Clerk and Election Officer at the Sumner County Courthouse.  A candidate may file by fee or petition.  The filing fee is $20.00.  Filing by petition requires signatures of 50 qualified electors of the city.

The offices of three Council member positions will be open for election.  Each office is a four-year term.  Current office holders are the following:

Council member – Bill Butts

Council member – Jan Korte

Council member – Vince Wetta

A primary election will be held if there are more than three times the number of candidates as there are members to be elected.  In this instance, if there are more than nine candidates a Primary will be held on August 1, 2017.  The top six candidates will continue on to the General Election.  If there are nine or less candidate filings, there will be no primary and all candidates will be in the General Election.
