By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow —  A residential fire at 1502 N. Plum St. in Wellington incurred $75,000 estimated damage after a fire started in the living room of the Julie Zeka Wright home yesterday evening.

There were no injuries.

According to a family source, no one was home when the fire started. Wright’s teenage daughter had been there earlier in the evening with her friends but had left.

Wright had come home and smelled smoke before calling 911. The WFD arrived at the structure fire in the 1500 block of North Plum at 9:22 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a single-story structure with smoke showing from the exterior.

Crews made an interior attack, locating the fire in the residence’s living room. According to a WFD fire release, it was quickly extinguished.

A malfunctioning electrical power strip was determined to cause the fire.

The Mayfield Fire District, Kansas Gas Service, City of Wellington Utilities, and the Wellington Police Department were among the assistance agencies.
