Grease fire at Woodlawn.

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A grease fire on a stove at Woodlawn Apartments resulted in an injury of a resident at 815 N. Woodlawn, Apt. 225 and caused $2,000 in damages to the apartment in Wellington.

According to a Wellington Fire Department press release, the incident occurred Oct. 31 at 10:24 p.m. There were eight fire personnel on the scene and three fire apparatus.

An occupant in apartment 225 mistakenly turned a burner on that had a pan of grease instead of a pot of water that was intended for soup preparation.

Jed Massoth, a visitor of apartment 223, rushed into 225 to remove the burning pot of grease from the stove and was burned in the process. He received burns to his head and arm and was transported to Sumner Regional Medical Center.

The fire damaged the stove, exhaust fan, cabinets, wall behind the stove and carpet.

“The use of a fire extinguisher, baking soda or lids should be used to extinguish cooking fires,” said Tim Hay, Wellington fire chief. “Never attempt to carry anything on fire through a structure as it can result in burns and the spread of the fire.”
