First court appearance scheduled for Thursday for Shelby Johnson, accused of murder
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Shelby Johnson, 26, of Oxford, charged with alternative counts of first degree murder, is scheduled for Sumner County District Court on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
Johnson is accused of murdering her 7-month-old daughter Jesslinn Hulett on Sunday, April 1 in Wellington.
She is scheduled to make her first court appearance before a Sumner County judge. Johnson is currently in Sumner County jail being held on $250,000 bond.
Johnson is charged with murder in the first degree, murder in the second degree, child abuse and aggravated endangering of a child – all felonies.
She is being accused of cruelly beating and shaking Jesslinn, causing great bodily harm with injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. Johnson allegedly caused injuries including scalp contusions, internal bleeding, three bone fractures to her skull, swelling of her brain, bilateral retinal hemorrhages, and related head injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.
Johnson is also accused of not seeking immediate medial treatment when these injuries occurred, but instead going back to bed for about an hour until the baby was found not breathing by the child’s father Schuyler Hulett.
Jesslinn’s death was ruled a homicide in May.
Sumner County Attorney Kerwin Spencer said that not much will happen Thursday except the judge will consult with Johnson over whether or not she needs a court-appointed attorney and her current status with the bond set against her.
