Five Cueball thoughts for May 12, 2013

Commentary by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Five Cueball thoughts for May 12, 2013…

1. Graduation…

I’m not going to crank out a Pulitizer Prize column here. It’s graduation Sunday at the McCue household.

My oldest, Devin, is graduating from high school. You know the oldest and most overused cliche in the history of mankind is “where did the years go?”

But is there any term more applicable?

My son has grown up on me. He’s graduating with honors from Wellington High School and will be attending Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in the fall.

I could not have been more lucky to have him as a son.

2. Inside vs. Outside…

Graduation weekend could not be more perfect weather wise. It is one of those days when you wished the Commencement Exercises could be held at Sellers Park.

Now it is held in the gymnasium.

I have mixed feelings. The fact that graduation was held on the Sellers Park football field made it unique. Now that it is in the gymnasium it feels too much like Class Night. We’ve been through the marching before.

But, on the other hand, the ceremony in the gymnasium allows people to actually see the graduate, hear the speakers, not worry about the wind blowing the stage away, take better pictures, not get a rip-roaring sunburn (if its sunny) and makes it more personal.

I could go either way on where to hold Commencement exercises. But there is one thing I will take a stand on. White cake is better than chocolate cake at the graduation parties. Just saying…

3. Tom Cruise…

Unfortunately, I missed the latest movie “Oblivion” at The Regent due to graduation weekend. I was speaking to someone at another movie while filing out of the Regent and we were pondering why anyone would go to Wichita to watch the same movie unless you get your panties in a wad and have to see it right the instant it comes out, or you simply need to get out of Wellington. The price is cheaper at the Regent, and the picture is better.

Anyway, I missed Top Cruise in action. I’m sure he was looking “earnest and intense.” And he’s very serious about whatever he is doing to save us. It’s always the same look, the same expression, the same thought process whether the movie is “Top Gun”, “Mission Impossible” or “Rock of Ages.”

Hey, I’m not a Cruise hater. I like the guy and I think he takes way too much crap by the media hordes. He has had the ability of placing himself in some of the best movies out there. So I see an awfully lot of the guy. But make no mistake: while the movie, scene and character may be different than the next, if the lead character is being played by Cruise, he’s the same guy.

4. All time hits…

It was a good week for Sumner Newscow. We broke the all-time weekly visit count and the all-time hit count. We broke the 50,000 hit weekly barrier in one week for the first time – smashed it actually with 51,109 hits. It’s been a milestone, we have been flirting with for several months now but hadn’t quite pushed ourselves over the top until this week.

Of course, the site was driven this week by some incredible stories – heroin, really? I knew it was going to be a busy news week when we had a graduation party to host today.

5. Shout out of the week…

This week goes to the Class of 2013 – the 102 seniors at Wellington and those around the county.
