Game synopsis:
Wellington baseball team is now 3-1
Wellington lost its first game of the season after winning its first three.
Thursday, Wellington split with Andale-Garden Plain-but-mostly-Andale. In the first game, Wellington beat the Indians 14-3 in a run-rule game that ended in five innings. The Dukes opened up a 5-3 lead after three innings before exploding with three runs in the fourth and six in the fifth to win.
Hank Shinliver had himself a game at the plate, ripping off two home runs, driving in five. Dusty Bannister also got himself a homer with two players on base. Wellington finished with eight hits to Andale’s five. Skyler Branam was the winning pitcher for Wellingotn allowing five hits, one walk, while striking out six in four innings pitched.
In game two, Wellington was off to a good start, leading 6-2 after two innings. But Andale roared back to win, getting three runs in the third and four runs in the fifth to make it 9-7. The Crusaders’ rally fell short in the sixth after scoring one run on a Wyatt Dickey single.
Wellington out-hit Andale in the second game 8-5, but committed five errors to the Indians’ four. Nick Giefer had the game’s lone RBI double.
On Tuesday, Wellington completed its sweep of Ark City with an 8-3 victory on the road. Wellington and Ark City played consecutive days on each other’s fields. Crusaders won on Monday 14-10 at Sellers Park.
In the second game at Ark City, Wellington broke open a 3-3 ball game after five innings with three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh. It out-hit Ark City 9-4. Shinliver and Emerson Brownlee both smacked doubles.
Crusaders host Wichita Collegiate on Monday for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
