Full slate of games including Wichita Collegiate at Wellington

Sumner County Sports reportby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — There’s a lot of things occurring this weekend throughout Sumner County. But no matter how busy we are, there is always room for a football game.

This week in Sumner County will include Wichita Collegiate at Wellington, Belle Plaine at Wichita Independent, Conway Springs at Wichita Trinity, Oxford at Central Burden and Argonia-Attica at South Haven.

Wichita Collegiate (5-0) at Wellington (3-2)

This could be another tough week for our football Dukes.

Wichita Collegiate will be rolling into Wellington with a 5-0 record and a No. 4 ranking in Class 3A.

Wellington, at 3-2, is still licking its wounds after losing to Andale 46-0. Worse, this Collegiate team defeated Andale 46-45 in overtime three weeks ago.

Collegiate likes to pass. Wellington has yet to see a passing team this season. It will be a tough test for a secondary that has yet to be tested.

Collegiate beat Clearwater 35-0 last week.

The Crusaders could see Remington Gilkey back in a limited roll on defense.

Conway Springs (4-1) at Wichita Trinity (4-1)

This is going to be a tough one for the Cardinals. Trinity defeated Cheney 19-7 last week. Both teams appear evenly matched.

The next two weeks will be huge in determining the pecking order of the Central Plains League. Conway Springs will host Cheney the next week.

The Wichita Trinity game isn’t essential. District play is next week. Cheney and Chaparral are two opponents the Cardinals need to beat if they will want any post season success.

Belle Plaine (0-5) at Wichita Independent (0-5)

Belle Plaine’s chance for a victory this season will ride on this game here. Wichita Independent is 0-5 and all but one has been double digit blowouts.

The Dragons close 14-6 loss to Douglass was frustrating because the streak is now at 24 games. The Dragons have Chaparral, Conway Springs and Cheney looming.

Oxford (1-4) at Central Burden (4-1)

The Wildcats may be running a lot in this game. Central has scored 70 points in its past two ball games.

Argonia-Attica (5-0) at South Haven (2-3)

South Haven has improved immensely under Cody Wolf this season but this game might be too tough for the Cardinals. The Titans, ranked No. 2 or 3 in 8-man Div. II depending on what poll you are looking at, has outscored their last three opponents by a 175-6 margin.

Caldwell (1-4) at Pretty Prairie (5-0)

This could get ugly quickly. Pretty Prairie has given up one touchdown this season and has beaten its opponent: 48-0, 52-0, 50-0, 60-8, and 50-0.  Caldwell fell to A&A 59-0 last week.
