GKN PreMac, Triumph and TECT Aerospace donate to Wellington Food Bank

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Three of Wellington’s major aircraft industries donated large checks this year to the Wellington Food Bank in what is being considered a record year for requests to the community outreach program.

A record year is not a good thing. Susan Musson, coordinator of the Wellington Food Bank, reported that the organization has received 10,300 request for food during this holiday season as of last week.

Contributions to the Food Bank by three aircraft companies came as welcome relief for the food bank. GKN PreMac, Triumph Aerospace and TECT Aerospace of Wellington held a friendly competition to see what organization collected the most food and money.

The three of them collected together 816 pounds of food. They also donated $3,002 which equates to 18,763 pounds for a grand total of 19,579 pounds. Between the three industries, there are 567 employees. The average pounds per employee is 34.59.

“While we always like donating food, cash is preferable,” Musson said. “We can buy food at bulk rate at 6 pounds per dollar (or 16 cents per pound).”

TECT employees donated a total of 335 pounds of food and $1,506.00 in cash (which converts to 9,747.50 pounds of food), for a contribution of 43.907 pounds per employee. The cash donation included $500 generously given by CREW.

GKN employees came in second with 166 pounds of food and $1,341.00 in cash (which converts to 8,547.25 pounds of food), for a contribution of 36.841 pounds per employee.

Triumph employees donated 315 pounds of food and $155 in cash (converting to 968.75 pounds of food), for a contribution of 11.360 pounds per employee.
