Hazel May (Newberry) Swingle, 93, Argonia: Oct. 29, 1928 – June 27, 2022

Hazel May (Newberry) Swingle of Argonia, retired bookkeeper and housewife, died Monday, June 27, 2022.

Hazel was born the daughter of Guy Vernon Newberry and Ellen Pearl (Draper) Newberry on October 29, 1928, at the home southeast of Freeport in Harper County.  She attended four years of country school before her parents moved north of Argonia and where she finished grade school and graduated at Argonia High School with the class of 1946.  After graduation, she worked at Muhlenbrunch Insurance Agency in Argonia.  Later, Hazel worked at Horton Furniture in Argonia and Wichita as a bookkeeper for 28 years.  She was a member of the Friends Church and Church Treasurer for 23 years.

On January 10, 1948, Hazel married Lawrence Swingle in Wellington.  Together they celebrated almost 62 years of marriage.  They operated a dairy and farmed and gardened all their lives until later years.  They greatly enjoyed their family and loved to go fishing with a lot of friends at Port Aransas, Texas for 37 years.

Survivors include daughter, Connie Amann, son, Ronnie Swingle and wife Jana, 5 grandchildren, other family members, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lawrence, brother, Ben Newberry and his wife, Virginia, sister, Dolly Martin and her husband, Don, brother-in-law, Everett Swingle and his wife, Barbara and brother-in-law, Charles Voge and his wife, Mary Lou.  

Graveside services for Hazel will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2022, at the Argonia Cemetery in Argonia.

A memorial fund as been established in her loving memory to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be mailed or left with the funeral home.
