by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington football team will host Winfield Friday evening in the first round of the Class 4A state football post-season.

In other playoff seedings, Conway Springs will get a first-round bye, Belle Plaine travels to Wabaunsee, South Sumner hosts Herington, and Argonia-Attica is traveling to Little River.

Wellington will be the No. 4 seed in Class 4A after Coffeyville was upset by Fort Scott. If it wins, it will play the winner of Andover Central-Augusta.

At first, the Coffeyville upset loss appeared to be a welcome development for Wellington, as it meant the Crusaders would get a higher seed. But what it did was bump Andover Central up to the No. 5 seed — meaning if Wellington beats Winfield in the first round, it will meet the team most observers think is the favorite to win the Class 4A-West in the second round.

Wellington will host No. 12 Winfield on Friday at 7 p.m. All playoff games in Class 4A are on Friday night. The Vikings are 1-7 after losing to Augusta 21-20.

Conway Springs got a bye. The Cardinals were supposed to host Syracuse, but that team had a forfeit and therefore was ineligible for the playoffs. The Cardinals will host the winner of Plainville-Hutchinson Trinity in the second round.

Belle Plaine will travel to Wabaunsee in the first round. The Dragons are the fourth seed, while Wabaunsee is a top seed from its district.

South Sumner will host Herington in the first round of the postseason as the district champion. Herington is 2-6 as a fourth seed. If South Sumner wins, it will play the Chase County-Sedan winner.

Argonia-Attica travel to Little River. A&A is a fourth seed playing a district champion that is 7-1.
