(Updated 9:35 p.m.) Wright finishes 6th in high jump; other qualify for finals at state meet

by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls track team got off to a good start this Friday during the first day of the two-day 2013 Kansas State Track and Field Championships. Wellington junior Holly Wright finished sixth in the Class 4A high jump, giving Wellington its first three team points of the track meet.

Wellington also qualified both its 400 (4×100) meter relay and 1600 (4×400) meter relay teams. The 1600 relay team qualified despite not having Megan Campbell in the lineup. Wellington head track coach Tyler Ryan said last week he might hold Campbell out in order to save her legs for Saturday where she will be running the 100 preliminary, the 100 finals, the 200 finals and a leg on the 4×100 meter relay team.

Wright had a huge day, jumping 5-2 and finishing sixth. As a team, Wellington has 3 points going into Saturday’s competition.

Wright also qualified for the 100-meter hurdles final finishing sixth in the preliminaries. The top eight will be running the finals race tomorrow.

Campbell turned in the best time of the day in the Class 4A 200 meters preliminary run today.
